A particle finite element method based on Level–Set functions

Since the seminal work of Idelsohn, O\~nate and Del-Pin (2004), Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) has relied on a Delaunay triangulation Alpha--Shape (AS) algorithm in remeshing process. This approach guarantees good quality Lagrangian mesh, but introduces list shortcomings that demand geometrical treatments tailored to each problem. In order improve process PFEM, this proposes use Level--Set (LS) function instead algorithm. considers boundary fluid its interior, not only geometric criterion as does Alpha--Shape, proposed strategy (PFEM--LS) shows more robustness than classical (PFEM--AS) owing three main improvements. First, LS allows for better control over elements are created during fluid/fluid contact, which helps reduce mass creation. Second, it preserve smoothness free surface loss. Third, meshing solitary particles detached from surface, improves representation drops PFEM. The methodology is presented validated using flow problems 2D.
